How I (Almost) Bonded With My Daughter

At the top of 2021, this midlife mom traded her sanity and safety just to make her 10-year-old daughter like her. I bought us each a pair of $120 roller skates on Amazon. Did it work? Sort of. We skate together every Friday night in the smooth, silky parking lot of a nearby private tennis club. We laugh. Or just roll along silently. It feels like we are on the same team, which makes me happy. But does that mean my daughter doesn't sometimes glare at me like I am a toad on a log? Ribbit.
