Does This Zoom Make Me Look Dead?
Zoom is the great equalizer. We all look terrible. Plus, it's hard to focus on your pal or your CEO when all you can do is stare at your own washed out face. But there are a few simple tweaks that can up your game from lame to no shame. Seriously, I have tried all of these tricks and they work:
Place the camera at eye level. Prop your laptop on a stack of books rather than your lap so that your face is not tilted downward, which is never flattering.
Avoid overhead light. (It creates shadows and showcases any creases.) Instead, sit facing a window so that your entire face is lit. Alternatively, opt for soft LED bulbs in a desk lamp and bounce lamp light off a wall so your whole face is illuminated.
Invest in a ring light. (I did!) A 10" ring light with warm, natural and white light modes and adjustable tripod will cast direct soft light on your face. No more scary shadows. (Amazon carries ring light kits that start at $35.)
Lastly, if you wear make up, apply more cheek color, extra under-eye concealer and a vibrant lip. Trust me, the effect won't be as dramatic on camera.
