Sleep well? Ha. Over the past couple of years, my hours of rest have become as turbulent as Elon Musk's love life. I blame the occasional midlife night sweat and constant Covid anxiety. My fix was simple: melatonin. Who doesn't want to eat a yummy berry gummy--or two!--before bedtime? (Sales of melatonin, which is a synthetic sleep-regulating hormone, increased a whopping 50% in 2020.) But melatonin isn't safe for everyone and these OTC supplements are marginally regulated by the FDA. If you're on anti-depressants, for instance, melatonin can reduce their effect; anyone pregnant or on blood thinners should steer clear. Don't mix booze with melatonin--the combo can cause dizziness and prolonged brain fog. Lastly, experts recommend that you start with a low dose like 1 milligram.
