WAIT UP! Tell Me Everything About Retinol.
Every dermatologist I have ever interviewed says the same thing: "If you're over 40, use retinol." So what haven't I done for the past decade? You got it. Here's the deal: retinol is a vitamin A derivative found in lots of beauty products. What does it do for your skin?
Boosts collagen production
Reduces fine lines and wrinkles; reduces pore size
Evens out age spots and hyperpigmentation
Exfoliates and speeds up cell turnover
Fights acne
But all retinols are not created equal. Prescription strength formulas (like Retin-A) are known as retinoids and work harder/faster than over the counter products that contain retinol. The most important thing to know is that a potent prescribed retinol can irritate your skin. Don't use more than a pea-sized amount and also, start using it every third night. Wait two weeks and then apply every other night if there's no irritation. There is a natural plant-derived version called Bakuchiol and it's better suited for sensitive skin. (Expect the same results as the over the counter version.)
For affordable OTC retinol skincare, I like products by ROC. But I plan to make up for lost years with an Rx from my dermatologist. My pores are not playing nice as I age.
