The Selfie That Sold For $34.9 Million

Big news for female artists and Latin American art. Sotheby's sold one of Frida Kahlo's final self-portraits--titled "Diego and I"--for the record price of nearly $35 million this week. (Interestingly, Frida surpassed the former record high in the Latin Art market of one of her husband Diego Rivera's paintings, which sold for nearly $10 million in 2018.) This is an important benchmark because the art world is notoriously skewed when it comes to sales: a recent study found that "in the top echelon of the art market—for sales above $1 million—artworks by male artists sell for 18.4% more than by female artists."
